KDP Is a Maze. Here’s the Map.

The book can be beautiful and the writing can be solid—and Amazon can still reject the file over one cranky little setup issue. Annoying? Yes. Fixable? Also yes.

1. Your interior has to behave

Choose the trim size first, use margins that leave room for binding, and make sure page numbers, headings, and spacing look intentional. A manuscript should not feel like it got dressed in the dark.

2. Your cover has to match the book

Paperback covers need the right full wrap: back, spine, and front together. The spine width depends on page count and paper. The title needs safe breathing room—not a near-death experience at the edge.

3. The previewer is your friend with a clipboard

Use KDP’s preview before you publish. Look for cut-off words, empty pages, low-resolution images, and anything sitting too close to the trim line. Fix every warning you can understand before pressing publish.

4. Keep the files separate

Your ebook and paperback usually need different files. One is reflowable; the other is a print layout. They are cousins, not twins.
